I’ve been reading a lot of stuff in the media about the movie The Passion of Christ, including Democratic Senator and presidential hopeful John Kerry’s comments about the film and his “concern” about anti-semitism in the movie.
If you’re worried about getting the story wrong why don’t you read the historical account. And I’m not just talking about the gospel writers in the New Testament. There are other historians who narrated the crucifixion just as accurately. Pilate had nothing to do with it. Pilate tried to get Jesus off-the-hook and the Jews, under the influence of the high priest and his band of hooligans put the kybosh on it. You can’t blame the Romans for this one. Yes, they participated. But they participated begrudgingly.
But what truly bugs me is that none of this bruhaha and negative PR was stirred up for Schindler’s List or any of the other less popular documentaries of the Nazis in the second World War. Is it really that different? I don’t think so. Sure the subject matter spans a couple centuries and the victim or victims are different, but isn’t there just as much cause for concern? But oh no. Schindler’s List is a piece of art. But as soon as we introduce religion into the picture, the Jewish groups get all antsy. Why is that? I’m not going to answer the question, but if you think about it, it’s not that hard.
Everybody needs to chill and let the movie speak for itself.

The Jews are right. The Romans were the ones that carried out the execution despite their hesitation and attempt to dissuade the populace. However, the one aspect of the account that is overlooked is the role of the Sanhedrin. Everyone focuses on Pax Romana with no reference to the Sanhedrin’s trial of Christ which violated their own legal process. Lots of blame to go around, just not a lot of people that want to shoulder it.
