So what’s the big freaking deal about anyway? Why’d you change the site? Why did you move all this crap around when I was just getting used to finding things where they were?
First of all you need to realize that very little has changed. All the old blog entries are still there. In fact the only place you’re going to run into a problem is if you’re reading an old article that has a link to another old article in it, in which case you’re going to get a 404 error because that page no longer exists.
Basically… the layman’s version is this: The site you saw a week ago (or even as late as noon today) used a system called Movable Type. It was really the “cutting edge” for blogging software for some time. I was itching for a change and had heard good things about Wordpress. So basically I installed Wordpress on the server, exported all the blog entries from Movable Type, re-imported them back into the Wordpress installation and voila… new website.
So why did I change? To say that Wordpress is “a little better” than Movable Type is the understatement of the year. For one thing - and I realize this will mean nothing to most of you - there is no rebuilding. Everytime I add content to the site, it’s done. Really all the things I wanted in Movable Type are in Wordpress.
There are going to be bumps in the road as I slowly personalize the site again to “look like me” - instead of the template I stole from somebody else - but overall the new system is a billion times better than the old one.
