It’s been a while since I wrote anything truly geeky. Why should you be deprived.
You know, I could rant on and on and on and on about this and make enough Microsoft jokes to send their legal team after me, but I won’t. I’m just going to state facts.
While I agree that there are better operating systems in the world than Windows, but for some of us Linux or FreeBSD or any of those other “geek” operating systems just isn’t an option. A lot of us have to use Windows for various reasons, whether it be gaming or whether it be “that one piece of software” that won’t run right under an emulator. The purists would argue that we should set up a dual-boot system to get around this, but I maintain that’s just too big of a pain in the butt. Windows XP is just not that bad.
BUT…. I will not say the same thing about Outlook (or it’s junior associate in crime, Outlook Express). I dare you to go to any reputable virus information site and look through the database for every virus and/or trojan horse that is written to exploit the Outlook family of e-mail clients. I will limit my anti-Outlook comments to this: It sucks. It’s buggy. It’s insecure. Don’t Use It.
I’ve been using Mozilla Thunderbird for about a year now. It does everything I would expect a mail client to do - except maybe PIM synchronization. I have yet to be nailed by one of these nasty e-mail worms too.
It handles multiple accounts. It has a wonderful address book. It renders HTML e-mail beautifully. Other than not having a calendar, there is not a single reason in the world to use that piece-of-crap they call Outlook - that is unless you like getting e-mail viruses.
At least try it before you swear it off. I gave Outlook a fair shake a couple of years ago. Then I found Thunderbird and I haven’t looked back since.
Very true. The first email client I used was Outlook Express. But… since no one knew my email I was “safe” later, I decided to try Thunderbird, but I didnt like it. A month later, I went back to Thunderbird and totally loved it.
The only reason Im not using it now is because: 1) I plan on switching internet providers, so my earthlink emails will be worthless, 2) I use gmail for my website email… so I dont have no more POP 3 email addresses. Gmail is my only email, so I dont need Thunderbird… yet.
