The press is plastered with quotes from United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan proclaiming to the world that Israel broke the ceasefire.
Do I care? No.
Does Israel care? Not likely. (And I might add as a side-note, Israel will never care who is against them because a) They are quite capable of fighting their own battles on their own terms and b) Purple pigs will orbit Uranus and Michael Jackson will be elected President of the Southern Baptist Convention before the United States turns it’s back on Israel. Be sure of one thing: The Bush administration is not being non-commital in this period of conflict. They are simply aware Israel doesn’t need any more help than they already have. If Israel wanted to turn Lebanon into a parking lot, the paint lines would have been dry weeks ago.)
Does Lebanon/Hezbollah care? Possibly only under duress.
Does Bush care? Perhaps it’s not evident in the text of the article a couple of months ago during the famous “oops, the microphone is on” session, but I clearly remember the tone of Dubya’s voice in his reference to “Kofi” and I really don’t think Bushy has much confidence in Kofi either.
Who elected this idiot? I didn’t. The Americans didn’t. Ooops. It looks like the UN Security Council picks the Secretary-General. So you’re telling me that a bunch of bureaucrats (who I’m willing to wager aren’t elected either) all get together in a room and essentially draw names out of a hat on who is best suited to speak on the world stage about global policy and lead an organization whose sole purpose appears to be getting in the way of every elected government on the planet that is actually doing something constructive.
I’ve been disenchanted with the UN since reading a Dennis the Menace story about the UN when I was a kid. It seemed like a hugely stupid idea when I was six, and thirty years later nothing has changed.
So no offense Kofi, but sit down, shut it, and get out of the way. Go watch Cool Runnings or something. (You were great in that, by the way.) The middle east needs another self-righteous self-centered bureaucrat about as much as the White House needs reserved parking spaces for two-humped camels.
Which Dennis the Menace strip?
