Everything I Need To Know I Learned From My Cat

Quote Of The Moment

An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last.

It’s a slippery slope.

On one hand, Whipper came from a pet store.  Whipper is “my baby” and for all intents and purposes we are inseparable.  I wanted a cat and didn’t know where to get one, so I went to a pet store (that has since gone out of business) and picked her up.  People who say cats aren’t smart or cats aren’t loyal or that cats aren’t obedient has not met Whipper.  I have never been closer to a cat.

Mariah did not come from a pet store.  Mariah came from the home of a relative who had two litters of kittens arrive at once.  Aside from being a bit of a mouthpiece, she’s not a bad cat.

So having said that, I don’t regret “buying” Whipper for one second, but at the same time it wasn’t until recently that I realized what total stupidity it is to buy a pet when there are so many cats out there who are homeless.  As I was reading through the Toronto Star tonight I came upon an article about the Second Chance shelter that is practically in my back yard, in Pickering, Ontario.

sable.jpgMeet Sable.  Sable caught my eye because up until Whipper, I had almost never had a cat that wasn’t black.  Joyce Smith, the woman behind Second Chance explains on several of the write-ups on their adoption page that black cats as a whole stay longer at the shelter because people don’t want them.  I really don’t know what the reasoning is there, besides perhaps superstition and the shedding of black hair.  I can say from personal experience that Twiggy, Rupert and Alex (who were all black) did not shed any more or any less than the two I have now and they were fine cats.  From what I can imply, Sable has been at SCWS since he was a kitten, but has never been adopted because of his colour.  Sable, along with dozens and dozens and dozens and dozens of other cats, are all living at SCWS waiting for someone to give them a home.

I don’t hit the serious button very often folks, but this outfit is on the level.  If you live anywhere in the Greater Toronto Area and are looking for a cat, please check out their website.  If I wasn’t at my “cat maximum” right now, Sable would be at my feet right now.  And if you can’t adopt a cat, why not throw them a few bucks?  They are totally dependent on donations and are a registered charity.
