More Vista 350 Goodness
Filed under General by netnomad at 10:03 pm on Jan 29 2004
One of the odd things I seem to get comments and e-mail a lot about is my earlier post about how to reset a Vista 350. Seems everybody has questions about these phones.
Would you have any idea or info about the printer
function on the vista 350? There is a RJ-11 plug on the back and also a print function. How does this work? Thanks!
I have no idea about this, but thought maybe some of you out there might. I know I have at least one Nortel employee out there who reads regularly. Well. He loads the site. I’m not sure if he knows how to read.
I seem to recall a rumour that the printer port was designed for a proprietary “tape machine” style thermal printer to print caller logs, but I don’t recall the details or whether the printer even made it to the final stages of production.
Can anybody help Stevie? Leave a comment! Thanks.

If I recall correctly. The printer port can be used to connect any compatible printer. The Vista can recieve ads (spam). I guess the ads are like junk mail in the way that companies pay money for different postal codes and send information to be sent out over the phones. The owner of the particular phone can choose to save and print out a particular ad if he or she wants to. Unfortunately I havent worked for Nortel for a few years so I don’t know fo any updates…sowwy…

The RJ-11 4P4C (Registered Jack spec. 11 w/ 4 Position 4 Conductor handset size jack)
on the Vista 350 module is an RS232 SERIAL interface
(9600 8-n-1 9600 baud 8 bits no parity 1 stop bit)
(AND NOT to be confused with the real handset plug!)
if you have a serial interface printer you’re golden however since the early 1980’s
the Centronics PARRALLEL interface has been ubiquitous and recently USB & Ethernet
interfaces are the de facto printer interface standards
I have some old (as in extinct - gone the way of wooly mammoth) serial paper
terminals/printers but …
there was? a serial printer option w/ cable you could? buy (or so Nortel said)
not available in Canada but possibly a baby Bell in the Carolina’s had? has? it for sale
anyhow … made my own cable and use a generic terminal interface software with capture mode
to dump anything that appears on screen - in particular phone directory and call log history
that is useful
(ever pressed Print when on the call log or directory main splash screen and seen all the
entries flash by and wondered what? where? could it possibly be do/go-ing? …)
will be providing details in near future - google for Vista 350 serial interface cable

I am very interested in your RJ11 serial printer cable!!
I have an old Laserjet Series II printer with a serial input. (I googled but it only came back here!
Is there some way of transferring the Vista memory data from one phone to another or, perhaps, via a computer??
