To Trust Sony Or Not: The Conclusion

So I went to the mall.
My first stop was “The Sony Store” where I met the most unhelpful pregnant woman I have ever met in my life. I’m convinced the Oshawa Sony Store does their hiring beside the Slurpee machine at the 7-11 around the corner.
I explained my dilemma to her (see the post immediatley preceeding this one). I explained that I go through three to four sets of MD-EX51LP’s a year. I pulled the 51’s and the 71’s off the shelf and put them on the counter. On further inspection, they really appear to not be the same headphones. The element might be the same inside, but it’s not the same on the outside. Perhaps it’s a later revision. This could lend credence to the Bay Bloor/Sony story. But I wasn’t prepared to blow a hundred bucks on a set of headphones, and she sure wasn’t encouraging me to. “You have 30 days”, she kept saying. Excuse me hon… but I said I go through FOUR pairs a year… how is a 30 day guarantee going to help me? Go back to McDonalds.
So I went to Radio Shack The Source By Circuit City to see if by chance they’d heard of the Sennheiser CX-300’s yet, since I know they sell Sennheiser, and actually sell quite a lot of it. I got the “Oh well, Canada gets stuff years after the States” line from a kid who looked like Zack from Desperate Housewives, and was equally creepy.
My eyes fell on the Sennheiser PX10’s. They were cheap, and looked comfortable. I like the sound of the MX500’s, but they’re not comfortable at all, and I keep losing the covers.
The PX10’s were cheap, so I decided to buy a pair and just use them until I found out what the CX500’s sell for in Canada. They sound at least as good as the MX500’s, but are comfortable, and they claim to be very durable. And they’re very lightweight.
They are the winner of my newly founded “cheap headphone” award.
I’ve consulted my electronics/wiring genius friend to see if he feels inspired to perform “advanced surgery” on the now-deposed MD-EX51LP’s. If he can find some way to replace/reinforce that insulation, they will last forever.
